Went ahead and reset my fish tank. The remaining fish from my last round were 2 Kuhli loaches and a Bristlenose Plecostomus. Here’s a quick photo dump. Tank is still cloudy but I have some chemicals that will help clear it out here soon. Sand makes a messbut looks great.

Once the tank settles over the next one to two weeks, I’m going to add two glass catfish and four neon tetras. Really cool fish coming.

Those bristlenose plecos... Mine is a monster and she’s pretty tough. My tank doesn’t produce enough algae to feed her, either.

Why did you reset it? I haven’t done it to a tank short of a move in a long time...

It’s been at my parents since May and has not been cleaned or anything. I put in a new substrate, a new filter, and new decorations. With a new house and new decor I need to switch it all up.

I used to keep marine fish in a 3 foot tank, but had to get rid when I moved to university. Every now and again I get tempted to start up again.

Unsolicited advice coming....

The reset will cause the tank to go through the nitrogen cycle again. Pull the carbon filter out so that it doesn’t remove the chemicals which drive the process. It took me a while to figure this out. I kept losing fish after the tank had supposedly cycled. I finally bought a testing kit and realized what was going on. The carbon blocks the cycle by removing the contaminants that drive it. Once saturated, the cycle kicks off in earnest and the fish would die. I kept a couple of carbon-free cartridges around just for starting new aquariums.

Loaches and catfish are more sensitive to it and will have a tough time. The mollies should be fine.

Nice! Male?

They’re so hard to photograph - super flighty/shy and well camouflaged.

I think so haha. I don’t think the females have bristled if I remember right but it’s been a while.

I’m using my old sponge style filter from my last pump that has no carbon until the water is acclimated. I also ran the old filter pump through that water for a day and a half then put in 2-3 gallons from the old tank. Hopefully I’m avoiding it going into the new tank cycle.

Once we have a lager place, I think the wife has warmed up to the idea of a freshwater stingray. Apparently they’re not too hard to keep, just need a 125 gallon or larger tank.

That’s good. Unfortunately, it will still cycle. The new substrate has to get populated.

Any chemicals I can use to kill the cycle? Also since I’m using sand and have loaches it’s getting moved the fish are changing way more than gravel. Will that change anything?

Me and my dad thought about a large tank to keep a bamboo shark a lit, but we never ended up doing it.

It’s all about bacterial growth. There are some items that will speed up the cycle a little by adding the right bacteria, but it only speeds it up about a week. It takes roughly a month to get settled. The sand will be fine. Just watch out for undermining. Fish can get squished if the rock they’ve undermined shifts.
